Purple

The story of this weaving.
Purple was Louise’s colour.

There are One Hundred Whenu.
Each one represents a hospital visit, doctors’ appointment or test she had to deal with between 6 January 2022 and 12 October 2022.

There is just one star at the top.
Underneath are twenty four. Reminding me of the delight she had in telling people she has six brothers and six sisters. Plus, of course, ten nieces and nephews.

There are nine rows of hukahuka. Nine months from that initial doctors visit.

I dyed the shredded harakeke purple. Initially I was not happy with the colour, so I dyed some more with a different brand of dye and then re-dyed the first batch.

The rows of purple are lighter at the top.
Early on things were relatively hopeful as the treatment made an incredible difference to that first ‘spot’.
The rows get darker and at the bottom they are very dark purple.
