the harakeke, to completing the weaving.<\/p>\n<p>During that year I got to spend some very special\u00a0time with a wonderful group of weavers. \u00a0We were privileged, during our classes with Veranoa Hetet, to look closely at kakahu woven by members her whanau. \u00a0Being allowed to touch the taonga woven by her mother and grandmother was inspirational.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After harvesting the the harakeke, the first step is to haro, extracting the fibres\u00a0from the green flax using the mussel shell. \u00a0Then it&#8217;s time to miro, wash and hang to dry in the sun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/prep.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then there were\u00a0the feathers to prepare.<br \/>\nI lost count of the number of pukeko pelts I used to get enough blue feathers.<br \/>\nBecause the feathers are so fine, each bundle has three feathers\u00a0in it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a whenu here, are waiting for me to use the patu muka made for me by one of my sons.<br \/>\nFirst they are saturated and then the patu muka\u00a0is used to beat out the water.<br \/>\nThe next stage was to kormuri each whiri to soften the muka<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/cast-on.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The extra fine muka hanging on the weaving frame are the thousand plus aho used to whatu the whenu together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whenu<\/strong> = verticle warp<br \/>\n<strong>Aho<\/strong> = horizontal weft<br \/>\n<strong>Whatu<\/strong> = weave<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing quite like the silky texture of muka when it has been through the necessary steps and it is ready to weave. \u00a0It is beautiful and a lovely soothing sensation when you caress the whenu as \u00a0you cast on that first row.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/progress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-306 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/progress-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"progress\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" stage of adding in the hukahuka. \u00a0It seemed to take forever. \u00a0The progress photo of the cloak on the weaving frame was taken at Te Papa as our group were part of the weavers working in the studio during the <em>Kahu Ora<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; <em>Living Cloaks<\/em> exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/top.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-315 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/top-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"top\" width=\"300\" (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI finished off the top and made a simple \u00a0cord of muka dyed black, to thread through the top as a drawstring.<\/p>\n<p>At this stage I still had not decided how I was going to finish the bottom. \u00a0I knew I wanted to do a taniko border but what pattern to use eluded me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/inspiration.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-336 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/inspiration-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"inspiration\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nI tried to remember old family photos with cloaks in them and I knew there was one of Mum&#8217;s Grandmother, Kuia Ani, with a Kahu Kiwi, but you can&#8217;t see any taniko pattern. \u00a0The only other I could remember was of Mum&#8217;s Aunt and this is the one I took for my inspiration.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weaving.isprettyawesome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/16taniko-halfway.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-314 size-medium\" style=\"text-align: center;\">To honour my Mother, who was known to all as Peace, I named my first kakau made in the traditional way using traditional materials.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
